How to Clear a Clogged Drain.

Hire a Plumber or Do it Yourself.

Many of us have been fooled into thinking that the best way to clean a drain is to use commercial products. Most of these commercial products are so powerful that sometimes they do more harm than good. Here’s an example. If your bathroom sink drain is clogged and you pour lye or acid (commercial drain cleaners) down the drain, the solution burns through the clog but also damages the pipes. This leads to major problems which require a professional plumbing contractor to be fixed.

Another problem with these powerful commercial drain cleaners is that they are harmful for our health. Although you pour it down the drain, the solution eventually ends up in the ground, affecting soil and water supplies. As we said, you don’t need those products to clean your drains. Besides the services of a plumber, you can also use some of these homemade solutions.

Plumber1. Baking Soda Drain Formula.
This is a method which you can use on a regular basis in order to avoid clogs. It involves one cup of baking soda and three cups of boiling water. Pour the baking soda in the drain and then add the boiling water. When these two mix together, they form a very alkaline solution which helps dissolve the clog. Repeat it a few times if it doesn’t work from the start.

2. Washing Soda Drain Formula.
This is a more powerful solution as the washing soda is more alkaline than the baking soda, with a pH of 11. What you must do, is pour one cup of washing soda down the drain and let it sit overnight. The washing soda will then have time to work its way down to the clog. Next, use the same method described above with the baking soda solution.

You should know that this method is not recommended if any commercial cleaners have been previously used on the drains. Also, don’t overuse the washing soda method as it may affect your PVC pipes.

If none of this works, then you still have one more option before using commercial drain cleaners. Calling a reliable plumber to help you with the clogged drain is highly recommended.
