Liquid staking protocols like Lido and Rocket Pool solve this by pooling funds and issuing a token. The institution never directly interacts with the beacon chain. Trust in a smart contract, reliance on a DAO's governance, and the risk of the middleman's own failures.

EIP-8222 doesn't create a new token. It doesn't change Ethereum's tokenomics. What it does is modify the core deposit contract to accept STARK proofs instead of raw public keys. When an institution deposits 32 ETH, the validator's identity is hidden behind a cryptographic commitment. The network still knows a validator is active—but not who runs it.

The best investments are uncomfortable. The comfortable narrative here is that privacy unlocks a wave of institutional capital. The uncomfortable truth is that this proposal might only benefit the top 1% of stakers while making the rest more dependent on intermediaries.
And then there's the regulatory angle. DAOs are not democracies—they are oligarchies of token holders. But regulators don't care. They will see EIP-8222 as a tool to demand mandatory proof submission. "You have the technology to prove compliance without revealing details? Great. Prove it to us every quarter." That adds operational cost that smaller players cannot absorb.
