Consider the chain: Bitcoin mining is an energy conversion process. The ASICs that run the SHA-256 algorithm are manufactured in Taiwan and South Korea, then shipped to regions where power is cheap. A disproportionate share of that mining infrastructure now sits in the Persian Gulf - the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, where electricity prices are subsidized by the very oil that flows through Hormuz. When the strait collapses, the energy supply for those facilities is cut. The data centers go dark. The mining rigs go silent. And a meaningful portion of the network's physical validation power disappears with them.
The market hasn't priced this in. Let me walk through three channels of exposure that the price action is ignoring.
First, the energy channel. Proof-of-work is, at its core, an energy conversion engine. Bitcoin's security budget is the value of the electricity consumed by miners. When energy prices spike, the marginal miner goes offline, and hashrate concentrates in the regions with the cheapest power. That's exactly the regions that are now in a war zone. A sustained 30-50% spike in oil prices would not just squeeze margins; it would trigger a hashrate consolidation that directly contradicts the decentralization thesis. The network would become more concentrated, not less, at the exact moment when it needs to be most resilient.
Second, the infrastructure channel. Over the past five years, the Gulf states have positioned themselves as crypto hubs. The UAE has mining farms, data centers, and exchange operations. Saudi Arabia is building digital infrastructure. These are not abstract projects - they're physical facilities with fiber connections, cooling systems, and power lines that all depend on regional stability. When the strait closes, these facilities become military targets or simply lose access to the energy and supplies they need. The "global network" suddenly has a very local failure point.
Third, the stablecoin channel. The $180 billion stablecoin market is the settlement layer of DeFi. Its collateral is overwhelmingly in U.S. Treasuries and dollar-denominated assets. When oil spikes, the Fed faces a stagflationary dilemma. If they hike rates to fight inflation, the value of the Treasury collateral actually rises - which is good for stablecoin solvency. But the real risk is the flight to safety: when the geopolitical environment becomes unstable, capital flows into the dollar, which is good for stablecoins. Yet it also flows into oil, gold, and real assets. The crypto market has no lender of last resort. When the stablecoin issuer faces a run, there's no central bank to backstop it. There's no insurance scheme. There's no diplomatic channel. The entire architecture assumes the physical world will remain stable enough to keep the collateral flowing.
That assumption is now in question.
Here's the counterintuitive angle that I think is most important: the industry's greatest strength - its independence from any single jurisdiction - is actually its greatest weakness in this moment. When the Strait of Hormuz collapses, the traditional financial system has a set of mechanisms: central bank interventions, strategic petroleum reserves, insurance coordination, diplomatic back-channels. Crypto has none of these. It has no central bank. It has no lender of last resort. And its fragmented governance structure means no single entity can coordinate a response when the physical substrate fails.

The industry that chants "code is law" doesn't want to admit that the law only matters if the physical infrastructure still runs.
